Ben Katchor
April 17 2007, 7:30 PM
Washington DCJCC
In his "picture stories," Ben Katchor turns the American city into a wonderland of tin ceilings, illuminated storefronts, and unusual enterprises: the Senseless Elaboration Parlor, the Sublime Vision Center, the Mortal Coil Mattress Store. The first cartoonist to win a MacArthur "genius grant," Katchor is the author of The Jew of New York, Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer, and The Cardboard Valise. He has also collaborated on several works of musical theater, including The Carbon Copy Building, The Rosenbach Company, and The Slugbearers of Kayrol Island. His comic strips have appeared in The New Yorker, The Forward, Metropolis, and other newspapers and magazines. In his public appearances, Katchor elevates the slide show to a form of performance art.

Jewish Mothers: A Staged Reading
Hosted by Susan Stamberg
June 12 2007, 7:30 PM
Washington DCJCC
"She was so deeply imbedded in my consciousness," says Alexander Portnoy in the opening line of Philip Roth's 1969 novel, "that for the first year of school I seem to have believed that each of my teachers was my mother in disguise." Overbearing and overprotective, meddlesome (when not being a martyr), the stereotypical Jewish mother gives love with one hand and takes it away with the other. And yet, in the works of writers like Henry Roth, Grace Paley, Mordecai Richler, Tillie Olsen, and Cynthia Ozick, the Jewish mother proves to be anything but predictable. Smart, independent, sexy—she is sometimes even a terrible cook. Susan Stamberg, a National Public Radio correspondent (and a Jewish mother), hosts an evening of dramatic readings featuring Jewish mothers from the Bible to the present.
